VAST and video rendering requirements

VAST describes video advertising responses. Playing a compliant response also needs a compatible player, tracking implementation and supported media assets.

A video response needs a compatible player

VAST describes a video advertising response. A working integration also needs media playback, handling for the supported elements, event tracking and a defined failure path. The supported VAST version and optional behavior need to be checked explicitly.

Separate three evidence questions: can the service produce the intended response, can the player interpret it, and does the target device play and measure it correctly? A yes to the first is not evidence for the other two.

Build an acceptance matrix before launch

Start with the video response types and media assets the integration actually accepts. Add the player and device combinations you intend to support. Record the outcome for each fixture rather than generalizing from one desktop browser.

Keep playback events distinct

Record request completion, media readiness and the documented playback events separately. Do not send a completed-view event simply because a response contains video metadata. A user closing the view early is an ordinary lifecycle case that should be represented accurately.

If wrappers or other optional features are used, test the implementation’s limits and error handling. This guide intentionally avoids asserting a universal supported depth or timeout; those belong to the actual player contract.

What this means for ADX evaluations

Consult current capability evidence before selecting a video or rewarded placement. A source-level video contract does not establish a shipped renderer, certified VAST interoperability or verified rewarded-ad behavior.

The checklist here is an original acceptance framework informed by the VAST specification. It is not a certification result, a compatibility matrix for ADX devices or an assertion of live video demand.
